Siemens Mobility has won an order to deliver 28 three-car electric Mireo regional trains to the state of Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The trains will be equipped with the latest digital technology, including the European Train Control System (ETCS) and Level 2 (GoA 2) Automatic Train Operation (ATO).
The order is worth approximately €300 million and includes a ten-year maintenance contract with an option for extending it by a further 20 years. The trains will be delivered in record time between November 2025 and April 2026.
The Mireo trains will be used on the Digital Node Stuttgart (DKS) pilot project, which is part of the Digital Rail Germany (DSD) initiative. The DKS is a major investment in the digitization of the German rail network, and the Mireo trains will be the first trains in Germany to be equipped with complete DSD equipment.
The ETCS is a digital train control system that is being rolled out across Europe. It is designed to improve safety and efficiency by providing trains with real-time information about their surroundings. The GoA 2 ATO system allows trains to operate automatically, with minimal human intervention.

The Mireo trains will also be equipped with a Train Integrity Monitoring System (TIMS) and the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS). The TIMS monitors the condition of the train and sends alerts if there are any problems. The FRMCS is a new communication system that will be used to transmit data between trains, trackside equipment, and control centres.
The delivery of the Mireo trains is a major milestone for the DSD initiative. The trains will help to improve the efficiency and safety of rail travel in Baden-Württemberg, and they will also set a precedent for the digitization of the German rail network.
In a statement, the head of the State Ministry of Transport for Baden-Württemberg, Berthold Friess, said: "Baden-Württemberg is continuing to be a trailblazer in the digitization of railways. The 28 Mireo trains will provide a state-of-the-art service for our passengers and will help to make our rail network more efficient and sustainable."
Albrecht Neumann, CEO Rolling Stock at Siemens Mobility, said: "The Mireo trains are the perfect solution for the Digital Node Stuttgart. They are equipped with the latest digital technology, and they are designed to provide a comfortable and efficient journey for passengers."
