Coventry City Council has selected Colas Rail UK to construct a 220-metre on-road test section for the Coventry Very Light Rail project. This initiative, spearheaded by Colas Rail’s Urban division, involves the installation of tracks using the innovative Coventry Very Light Rail track system technology, which CRUK previously trialled successfully.
This project represents the first permanent implementation of this groundbreaking concept. The On Road Test will allow local residents and stakeholders to experience the vehicle firsthand and provide valuable feedback. This pioneering approach has the potential to transform the Light Rail market, making urban transport more affordable for cities and larger towns.
Work began on February 4, 2025, with the initial phase expected to be completed by Spring. A four-week showcase is planned for the Summer. In the long term, Coventry Council aims to develop a comprehensive network across the city.
What is Very Light Rail?
The Very Light Rail concept utilises precast track slab panels made from innovative Ultra High Performing Concrete. These track slabs are significantly shallower than those used in traditional light rail construction, reducing the need for extensive excavations and large-scale highway modifications. This makes the Coventry system more cost-effective compared to current light rail systems.
Lower Carbon Emissions & Costs
The shallow depth of the panels also offers environmental benefits, including reduced carbon emissions during installation due to the smaller scale of the build. Additionally, the reduced depth of the slabs eliminates the need for costly and time-consuming buried service diversions, as they do not interfere with existing networks.
Speaking on the contract award, Urban Managing Director, Iain Anderson said “We are delighted Coventry City Council chose Colas Rail UK for this strategically important scheme and look forward to developing this innovative solution together.”
