East Midlands Railway (EMR) has seen a significant increase in the use of digital tickets, with nearly 80% of customers opting for this convenient option. From January 5 to February 1, 2025, 79.90% of all tickets purchased were digital, highlighting a growing preference for buying tickets on personal devices.
Digital tickets offer numerous advantages over traditional paper tickets:
- Convenience: Easily purchased, stored, and accessed on smartphones or other digital devices, eliminating the need to visit a ticket office or wait for postal delivery.
- Security: Reduced risk of losing or forgetting tickets, as they are securely stored in a digital wallet or email.
- Environmental Impact: Digital tickets help reduce paper usage and waste, making them an eco-friendly choice.
- Flexibility: Passengers can access their tickets anytime without carrying physical copies, and they can often exchange or refund tickets online.
For those who still prefer paper tickets, they remain available for purchase at staffed station ticket offices.
Simon Pready, Commercial Director at East Midlands Railway, said:
"With nearly 80 per cent of tickets now purchased digitally, it’s clear that customers value the ease and flexibility that digital ticketing provides.”
"Whether it’s avoiding queues, reducing paper waste, or having instant access to tickets on their phone, digital options are transforming the way people travel. Of course, for those who prefer a traditional paper ticket, that option remains available at our staffed stations.”
