Simple steps help cut Merseyrail fare dodging
Merseyrail has stated that it has been able to reduce the rate of ‘ticketless travel’ on its trains to around 1.5%. But what has been the reason for this drop? I hear you ask.
Well, according to the regional rail operator, it’s not rocket science: more ticket gates at stations, plus more manual ticket checks.
So, is it possible to achieve this success for other rail operators? It would appear so.
ATOC says fare-dodgers cost the industry £240m a year by making 120,000 unpaid journeys a day across Britain. So, any moves to reduce this figure should be welcomed. However, when asked, Merseyrail was unable to provide details of the financial costs of fare-dodging to the company. Clamping down has a cost, too.
