Independent Glass shines at Railway Interior awards

Independent Glass were recognised at the Railway Interior Innovation and Excellence Awards 2007 recently held at the Railway Interiors exhibition in Cologne.

Presented at a gala evening, the awards recognise the rapidly increasing sophistication of railcar interior design, equipment, technology and furnishings. Independent Glass were shortlisted in the 'Safety & Accessibility Innovation' category for their new laminated toughened double glazing unit which was nominated for its improved protection for passengers. This lightweight and economic unit will reduce injury from external objects striking windows and improve passenger containment in the event of roll over accidents.

The product meets the latest recommendations for body side glazing released earlier this year by the Rail Safety and Standards Board, having undergone a stringent physical testing regime. The unit has recently been specified for use in the Mk III coach refurbishment programme to bring coaches up to this latest passenger safety standard.

John Devine, managing director, says: “We are really pleased that our continued efforts in the arena of rail safety glazing have not gone unnoticed. It is an area where the company believes it can truly add value and assist in improving the safety standards of the industry to the benefit of everyone.”

IG were pleased to be named eventual runner-up in the category, coming a close second to Fogtec, who were recognised for their new fire protection system for railcars.

Independent Glass is Link-up certified, Unipart Rail Technical Dossier 2 approved, member of the Railway Industry Association, member of the Glass & Glazing Federation and a full supplier member of Rail Safety and Standards Board.
