Hitachi selects MTU to supply IEP engines
MTU has been selected as the preferred supplier to design, develop and service 250 Powerpacks for the Hitachi’s IEP Super Express trains.
The contract is worth over €200m, and MTU will supply Powerpacks with 700kW engines of the type 12V 1600 R8OL, as well as servicing for 27.5 years.
Hitachi Rail Europe Ltd is contracted to replace the UK’s ageing intercity fleet for the Intercity Express Programme with 92 Super Express trains, to be run on the East Coast Main Line and the Great Western Main Line.
All the trains are to be fitted with a Powerpack, providing self-rescue capability.
Alistair Dormer, executive chairman and CEO of Hitachi Rail Europe said: “Hitachi has gone to great lengths to pick a highly reliable, energy-efficient engine for the Super Express train.
“To support us during the manufacturing phase of the train and the whole-life running, MTU is the ideal partner.”
MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH is a subsidiary of Tognum AG, whose chief sales officer Dr Michael Haidinger said: “Tognum is proud to be part of the Intercity Express Programme and to be partner of Hitachi. We can bring our long lasting experience with extensive maintenance contracts and with extremely reliable rail power packs to the partnership.”
