Transport for Wales (TfW) has published figures showing improvements to rail performance since the start of this year.
Since January, over 80% of TfW trains have arrived on time or within three minutes of their scheduled arrival. The most recent monthly statistics for March show that this has risen to 85% of rail services.
Cancellations across the network have also stayed below the 5% target.
These improvements to rail performance reflect TfW’s £800 million investment into brand new trains across the Wales and Borders network. It is expected that as more new trains are added to the network, rail performance will continue to improve across Wales.
Adam Terry, Head of Rail Performance at TfW said:
“Our rail performance figures for 2024 are encouraging and have shown an improvement of how our trains are operating on our network and we’re hitting our targets.
“Nearly fifty percent of our train fleet has been replaced with newer trains as part of our transformation programme and as we continue to add more brand-new trains to our network we expect to see continued improvements.”
TfW has introduced a new metric for measuring punctuality on the rail network. Rail targets were previously measured by Public Performance Measures, which meant it was acceptable for trains to be running late for most of a journey, but arrive on time at the last stop. This would often be achieved by skipping stops to catch up with the timetable.
The new metric, Passenger Time Lost, measures punctuality at every recorded station stop on a journey and accounts for the number of passengers arriving at their destination. This method for measuring punctuality offers a more in-depth picture of how effectively TfW is serving its passengers.
