Train travels down tracks

Rail Delivery Group opens competition to mark World Earth Day

To mark World Earth Day (22nd April) the Rail Delivery Group has opened a new competition to appoint three ‘Chief Environment Officer’.

Rail Delivery Group has partnered with explorer and broadcaster Simon Reeve as part of the competition and each winner will receive £10,000 to travel Britain’s best green journeys.

The new Chief Environment Officers will also review the journeys and uncover the green credentials of each destination.

Research recently conducted by Rail Delivery Group has found that 46% of Brits are unaware that rail is the most sustainable mode of transport.

The research found that around one in ten believe that travelling by car or plane is better for the environment.

Simon has backed the initiative saying: “Choosing to travel by train instead of driving cuts carbon emissions by two thirds, making it a better choice for the environment.

“Rail can connect you to lots of fantastic destinations across Britain, from Buxton in the Peak District to Okehampton in Devon.”

The competition will run until midnight on 5th May when the deadline for applications will close.

Applicants will be required to submit a 60-second video bringing a recent rail trip to life and explaining why they should win and champion sustainability.

The three winners will be decided by a panel of judges including Simon Reeve and travel vloggers Chloe Wanderlust and An Adventurous World.

Jacqueline Starr, CEO of Rail Delivery Group said: “Many of us are increasingly concerned about our personal impact on the environment, and what we can do to lessen it.

“We hope that our newly appointed Chief Environment Officers show people how easy it is to make greener journeys by train.”

Applications can be made by visiting the National Rail website.
