The Municipality of Naples has awarded Hitachi Rail with the contract to supply the new generation of its trains for the Naples Metro Line 6.
Worth €200 million, the contract will see Hitachi Rail producing 22 trains for the line. Trains will carry a capacity of 290 passengers, with a length of 39 meters and coming equipped with Automatic Train Protection. This technology ensures that the operation of the trains is safe, whilst also providing an innovative air conditioning system that is designed to make passengers more comfortable as they travel.

Chief Operating Officer at Hitachi Rail Group, Luca D’Aquila, said:
“Hitachi Rail is committed to providing sustainable and innovative mobility solutions worldwide.
"We believe that public transport, and in particular urban transport, plays a crucial role in bringing people and communities closer to an integrated and increasingly sustainable mobility ecosystem. Our reliable, safe and comfortable transport systems can encourage the greater use of green mass transport, helping to drive a modal shift away from private transport, delivering increasingly connected and green cities.”

The trains will be manufactured at Hitachi Rail’s factories in Pistoia and Naples and the first phase of the contract will include the first six new trains’ construction. These will enter service in 2026, contributing to an increase in the frequency of services on the metro.
Gaetano Manfredi, Mayor of Naples, also added:
"It is a fundamental step to enhance rail transport in the city with the latest generation trains that guarantee efficiency and safety to users. The Administration's efforts to equip the city with an increasingly articulated and technologically advanced transport system continue”.
