Construction work on Line 14

Metro line fitted with new automated system in technology overhaul

Siemens Mobility and Régie autonome des transports Parisiens (RATP) have completed the modernisation of the automated Paris 14 metro line.

This upgrade marks the first time that an automated driverless metro line has migrated to the latest generation GoA4 “Trainguard MT CBTC” system.

This new system, which has been implemented over the last six years with over 500,000 hours of engineering work, will enable more efficient and reliable services on the line.

The line has also been extended to Paris Orly Airport, doubling in length, and at 28 kilometres is now the longest line on the Paris metro.

Michael Peter quote

Siemens Mobility and RATP first teamed up to create a driverless high-capacity automated metro line in Paris in 1998. In 2018, Siemens Mobility was awarded contracts to overhaul the line’s automation.

The Trainguard MT CBTC GoA4 system replaces the less advanced METEOR system. The upgrade also included the construction of a new Operations Centralised Control Station and equipping of 72 new trains.

The GoA4 CBTC technology will also be deployed on the future lines of the Grand Paris Express, the new 200-kilometre automatic metro network currently under construction in the French capital.

The radio-based system precisely locates each train on the network and controls speed, offering improved safety and the ability for continuous updates on system status, resulting in fewer journey delays.
