LRSSB publishes comprehensive guidance on tram procurement

The Light Rail Safety and Standards Board has released comprehensive guidance for those involved in the procurement of new trams. This document is designed for tramway owners and operators, detailing the necessary specifications to comply with current legislation and best practices.

Craig O’Brien, Head of Engineering Safety and Innovation at the LRSSB, explained: “First and foremost, all trams should be designed to be as safe as possible for passengers and employees.

“Although trams are not subject to the same mandatory requirements as those of other road vehicles, they do share operational responsibilities. Therefore, their design, safety certification, and operational regulations dictate they should include features in their construction and performance that make them safe for use on the highway and in other places where they share the infrastructure with other users.

“This comprehensive guidance covers all the key requirements of both UK and European regulations and has been expanded to cover other important considerations, including integration with existing infrastructure, audible warnings, exterior lighting, obstacle avoidance technology and electromagnetic compatibility.”

Available to download from the LRSSB Safety Hub here, LRG46.0 - Tram Vehicle Procurement Guidance also covers the latest environmental standards as well as a wealth of information on windows, glazing and door design, as well as cab ergonomics and driver assistance devices.
