FirstGroup has taken a significant step by submitting the initial phase of an application to the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) for a new open access rail service between Rochdale and London. This move aims to restore a direct link that has been absent for nearly 25 years.
Since its launch in October 2021, Lumo has revolutionised long-distance travel between London and Edinburgh, boosting passenger numbers for all operators on the East Coast Mainline. Plans are now in motion to extend Lumo’s service to Glasgow, with the proposed Rochdale route being the company’s second.
Lumo’s success over the past two years is attributed to its low fare model and strong environmental credentials, having transported approximately 2.5 million passengers. Lumo offers a single class of travel with affordable fares, consistent Wi-Fi, and at-seat catering. An independent survey last month revealed a customer satisfaction score of over 96%.
FirstGroup’s proposal includes six return journeys daily, aiming to re-establish the direct Rochdale to London link via Manchester Victoria, last operational in 2000. This new service is expected to benefit 1.6 million people in the North West, providing a convenient and competitively priced rail option to London, encouraging a shift from coach and car travel to rail.
The trains will operate from Rochdale to London Euston, stopping at Manchester Victoria, Eccles, Newton-le-Willows, and Warrington Bank Quay. The Eccles station will enhance connectivity for Salford, including the growing MediaCity area, while Newton-le-Willows will improve rail links for St Helens.
For more insights of developments in the rail industry across the north, the TransCityRail North conference and dinner is taking place in Manchester this November. You can find out more details of how you can attend here.
Services are anticipated to commence in 2027.
