Amtrak has moved forward with plans to modernise its fleet issuing a Request for Proposals (RFP) to replace its ageing long distance fleet with brand-new trains. The multi-billion dollar investment could mark a turning point for cross-country rail journeys in the USA.
"We strongly believe in the future of our long distance service," said Amtrak board chair Tony Coscia. "It connects communities across the nation, offering essential mobility and economic links. This new fleet will allow us to transform the service, catering to the needs of present and future customers."
"This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reimagine our iconic routes," said Amtrak president Roger Harris. "We're looking for a modern, accessible, and sustainable fleet that will redefine long-distance travel."
This RFP follows extensive consultations with potential builders, ensuring the new trains meet current and future market demands. Following vendor selection, a multi-year design, development, and production process will commence, with deliveries expected in the early 2030s.
"Intercity passenger rail, including Long Distance service, is vital to our national transportation network," said federal railroad administrator Amit Bose. "Millions rely on it as a safe and convenient alternative to congested roads and airports. This investment ensures they deserve a modern and comfortable experience."
This RFP is part of a broader effort by Amtrak to enhance the Long Distance customer experience. Other initiatives include:
- Purchasing 125 ALC-42 Long Distance locomotives, with more than three dozen already in service. Made in the U.S., these locomotives are cleaner, faster, more fuel efficient and more environmentally friendly than their predecessors.
- Investing $28 million for interior upgrades to 400 bi-level Superliner and 49 Viewliner cars. Nearly 200 Superliner cars have been refreshed and are in service and the Viewliner refresh will begin in 2024.
- Restoring and repairing 63 idled railcars by the end of 2024.
"This is a momentous occasion for rail enthusiasts and the traveling public alike," said Rail Passengers Association President & CEO Jim Mathews. "This acquisition will be the largest since the 1940s, guaranteeing a safe, modern, and exceptional rail travel experience for generations to come."
