Alstom has signed a framework agreement worth €2.8 billion with Hamburger Hochbahn AG to cover the delivery of almost 400 automated and semi-automated metro trains.
The framework agreement includes 254 semi-automated and 120 fully automated (GoA4) DT6 metro trains, each consisting of four cars. With a modern interior design, digital passenger guidance and USB charging connections, the fleet offers high capacity, passenger safety and comfort.
The contract also covers Alstom’s commitment to equip the 25 kilometre-long and fully automated new U5 metro line with the innovative CBTC system Urbalis. The line is still under construction, but once completed will be served by the 120-strong fleet of GoA4 metro trains.
Meanwhile, the fleet of 254 semi-automated metro trains will gradually replace the existing DT4 fleet and run on parts of the existing network.
The U5 metro line will be fully equipped with Urbalis signalling for driverless operation, which will improve punctuality, frequency and energy efficiency. Once all 23 stations on the line are complete, the U5 will operate at 90-second intervals. This will enable the transportation of around 270,000 passengers on the line each day.
Robert Henrich, CEO of Hamburger Hochbahn AG: "With the new vehicles, we are modernising our fleet and creating the conditions for fully automatic operation on the U5.
“The new DT6 will offer customers a completely new experience – from the interior design, transparency and brightness to the modern information systems that provide passengers with optimum orientation.”
The production of the new generation DT6 metros is scheduled to commence in 2026, with delivery of the first vehicles planned for early 2028. The start of passenger operation on the first section of new line is scheduled for 2029.
