Alstom has successfully completed the signalling upgrade of the Beni Suef-Assyut (BSA) railway line in central Egypt.
The 250-kilometre line serves 15 stations along its route, which connects the cities of Beni Suef and Assyut along the Nile river.
Alstom has supplied signalling equipment for the BSA since 2015 and was responsible for every aspect of the design, installation, testing and commissioning of the latest comprehensive upgrade.
The upgrade features an advanced SIL 4 signalling electronic interlocking system, which ensures maximum safety and reliability. The interlocking system operates points, signals and level crossings and checks that rail sections are free, establishing routes and preventing conflicts.
The technology transmits train control information digitally, so signals and points can be controlled from much greater distances.
The system also uses a robust support system and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) technology, which enables operators to deliver consistent high levels of performance and availability.
Egypt Managing Director at Alstom, Ramy Salah, said:
"We take great pride in achieving this significant milestone for a project of such importance to equip Egypt's railway network with state-of-the-art technology solutions."
“Our aim is to enhance the safety and efficiency of line operations while improving the passengers' travel experience. This accomplishment marks a major milestone in our continued efforts to deliver world-class mobility solutions that meet and exceed our customers' expectations.”
With the new signalling upgrade, trains along the BSA line will be able to run at speeds of up to 160km/h. The line has a capacity to transport 60,000 people daily, providing a vital artery through central Egypt.
