Nexus completes £1m Metro lift replacement project
Nexus, which owns, manages and is modernising Metro, has successfully completed a £1m project to replace six ageing passengers lifts at stations across the system.
The lifts, some of which were more than 30 years-old, have been replaced with cleaner, quieter and greener lift cars, with CCTV installed for improved security and to deter vandals.
The work forms part of the £300m Metro: All Change programme which will see Metro stations and trains modernised and millions spent on renewing track, overhead lines, communications and technology systems, bridges, tunnels and other structures.
All new lifts will be fitted with the very latest technology which allows them to save energy when they are in use and also when they are on standby, helping to reduce Metro’s overall carbon footprint.
Nexus has managed to complete the lift replacement project on schedule, with the sixth new lift entering service at Chichester Metro station in South Tyneside on Wednesday.
Metro stations to get new lifts include Monument and Central Station in Newcastle city centre, Gateshead Interchange, South Shields station and two at Chichester.
Director of Rail and Infrastructure for Nexus, Ken Mackay, said: “I am pleased to say that this phase of modernisation work has been completed successfully and on time.
“The work was extremely important because the lifts were over 30 years-old and needed to be replaced.
“Metro passengers should look out for further modernisation work on the network in the coming year as we press ahead with our exciting £300m Metro all change programme.”
The lifts were installed by Kone.
