‘Major step’ achieved in London Underground resignalling
The first modern signalling equipment has been installed between Edgware Road and Hammersmith on the London Underground.
The SelTrac CBTC signalling system, designed by Thales, is due to be installed in sections across the Circle, District, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines – 40% of the network – between now and 2021, following delays to the project.
It will provide a 33% increase in capacity and allow London Underground to run 32 trains an hour at peak times by 2022.
Andrew Pollins, managing director of London Underground, said: “This is a major step in delivering this vital upgrade for millions of our customers. The signalling system on these lines is some of the oldest in use anywhere in the world, with parts of it dating back to the 1930s.
“The use of this newer, more sophisticated signalling system will mean more frequent, more reliable and less crowded journeys and will help us meet rapidly growing customer demand.”
The system has already been introduced on the Northern and Jubilee lines. The upgrades on the subsurface lines are due to be followed by new trains and control systems.
