Lewes – Uckfield should link Brighton to London
The reopening of Lewes to Uckfield would have no business case unless it was extended as a second Brighton main line to London, the BML2 Project Group has stated.
The group is calling for a longer route to be considered, including the restoration of Lewes – Uckfield, new line between Uckfield and Brighton, the re-instatement of Tunbridge Wells West, reopening Selsdon to Elmers End, the creation of Croydon Gateway station and a link into Thameslink with line between Stratford and Lewisham.
This would provide a rail link between Gatwick and Stansted airports, allowing them to function as a ‘hub’, relieve overcrowding, provide increased destinations across the South East for commuters and speed up journey times.
BML2 state on their website: “The cost would be significant, but the rewards immense. On commuter traffic alone the cost might be hard to justify, but add in the fact that this route would directly connect London’s Gatwick and Stansted airports with one dedicated airport shuttle (termed ‘Stanwick’) passing right through the capital’s financial heartland and immediately the business case takes off.”
