Historic Victorian rail bridge given facelift in restoration project
A historic Victorian-era railway bridge in Wandsworth at Earlsfield station has been restored by engineers.
A team of Network Rail engineers spent 36 nights upgrading the bridge by removing rust, defective paintwork, and accumulated waste.
In a show of respect to the bridge’s Victorian heritage, the steel bridge was repainted ‘railway’ green, with the station name added across.
Wandsworth Council also contributed £100,000 towards the restoration project.
Simon Hubbard, project manager for Network Rail, said: “The new-look bridges have done a lot to improve the overall appearance of the local area and I’m delighted we’ve been able to give the structures a new lease of life.
“The local community have been passionately behind the revival of these bridges, so I’m delighted we’ve been able to deliver this upgrade for them.”
