Firefighters called to station as control room batteries release hazardous fumes
Firefighters from Essex County Fire and Rescue Service attended an indecent yesterday at Colchester station after reports of hazardous fumes had caused someone to fall ill.
The local fire service said: “On arrival firefighters reported that a bank of industrial batteries had overheated in the control room and were concerned they may be giving off sulphuric acid fumes.
“The Hazardous Materials Officer then ran several tests to determine if there was any further risk, and confirmed that the area was safe.
“The batteries were then isolated and the scene was handed back to Network Rail at 6.08pm.”
RTM contacted Essex County Fire and Rescue Service for more information, but was told there were not further details - such as the cause - at this time.
