Strike while the iron is hot
Undoubtedly, the Olympic Games will present a huge challenge to those working on the railway. Increased passenger numbers must be handled to ensure London’s transport system continues to provide a quality service.
So it is understandable that these workers are seeking remuneration for the extra hours and effort they must undertake.
Yet it seems as if every day the RMT announces some new deal, with hundreds of pounds secured for staff whose work, it could be argued, will not be significantly affected by the influx of people.
Using such a complex event, and the threat of disruption if staff were to strike, to force companies to placate this unions’ members with more and more money is costing the taxpayer and directing funding away from much needed improvements.
