Freight terminal construction begins
Construction has begun on a railway link that will be used to transport nuclear waste out of Dounreay power plant.
A freight terminal will be built at Georgemas Junction, in Halkirk, to carry the fuel out of the decommissioned nuclear plant and transport it to the Sellafield nuclear site inCumbria.
The work is expected to be complete by this summer, with the first journey to take place later on this year.
Train operator Direct Rail Services (DRS) believes the development of the terminal will open up other opportunities for non-nuclear material to be moved in and out of the area.
A spokesman said: “DRS routinely moves nuclear fuel between Sellafield andUKpower stations. The Georgemas railhead will extend its network toCaithnessfor the first time.”
