Upgrade plans for Tottenham Hale station

Tottenham Hale station is to benefit from improvements as part of TfL’s Tube Improvement Programme.

The proposals would be funded with £20m from the Unlocking New Growth Areas and includes a contribution from the Mayor’s Recovery Fund.

Subject to planning approval, work is expected to start on site in 2015 and will take approximately 18 months to complete.

David Waboso, London Underground’s director of capital upgrades, said: “The improvements include doubling the size of the current ticket hall, and installing new ticket gates. This will reduce crowding and queuing at the station, saving passengers time when interchanging between National Rail operated by Greater Anglia and Tube services.

“We are also proposing to create a new, more convenient pedestrian route from the east to the Tube and bus stations by extending the existing bridge to the Hale Village development. We plan to keep the station open during the work so that any potential disruption will be kept to a minimum.”

Is there any point to enlarging the ticket hall when tickets are going to be redundant soon: no Oysters, no SCRCs, presumably no YPDCs? Perhaps a mobile/texting and twitter room might be more in keeping with the age, so that people do it there rather than right under your nose on a moving train, and irritate the heck out of other passengers.

This is part of TfL sponsoring a new service from Stratford to Brimddown in 2016 (ish) and a major traffic scheme ongoing at the moment. What it means is the National Rail station will become gated, with a bigger circulating area between the Victoria line station and the Lea Valley platforms. tfL is into gating even little stations on the GO-B line so this is an inevitable move. What is more urgent is the one extra through platform planned for the Stratford - Brimsdown service and additional capacity to and from Cambridge and Stansted. The present set up is a bit scruffy and basically goes back to the Victoria Line opening. £20m is small change to Boris these days!
