Metrolink unveils unique ‘Spirit of Manchester’ tram

Metrolink yesterday unveiled a special tram that pays tribute to the “unique spirit” of Manchester that passengers will now be able to see running on the network.

Tram 3022 has been renamed the ‘Spirit of Manchester’ and is adorned with a grey, yellow and black design featuring the now iconic worker bee – an insect which in the past few weeks has become significant as a symbol of the city’s solidarity and unity.

The unique tram started running on the same day as the One Love Manchester concert, which was organised to raise money for the families and victims of the attack on Monday 22 May.

To show their support for the event, Metrolink last week announced that all passengers travelling to the concert at Old Trafford would be given free tram travel.

Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham, said: “The incredible spirit of the people of Manchester has been what has sustained us all since last week.

“Our city has come together and the unity we have shown has made Manchester a beacon of hope around the world.

“The Manchester Bee has taken on a new significance over recent days and it is fitting that we display it proudly on the Metrolink.”

Cllr Andrew Fender, chair of the Transport for Greater Manchester Committee, added that Manchester’s unique spirit had been on display for the whole world to see in recent days, and it was fitting that it was now displayed on the tram network as well.

“The kindness, courage, strength and resilience of the local community is no surprise to anyone who knows the city well,” he stated. “Metrolink and the Manchester bee are both local icons of our great city and this special tram unites the two, as we stand strong together.”

Well done to Manchester Metrolink for showing this "Bee" icon on one of their trams since the attacks that shocked Manchester and the UK few weeks ago.

Wonderful gesture but why stop at one tram? Transparent vinyl stickers are quick and easy to produce (we had 500 30-cm-diameter stickers made a couple of years ago for a local promotion) so add them to all of the trams!
